Newport Oregon Halibut Fishing 2026
My name is Captain Don Koskela and I’m the owner of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. This guide explains the typical season, when the halibut bite is good, and what to expect when you go fishing for halibut in Newport Oregon in 2026. I’ve been out with anglers on the Oregon Coast for over 15 years and Pacific halibut is one of my favorite fish to chase out of Newport.

I want to make one thing clear right off the bat. I am the new owner of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. We are not a third party booking service, we are a captain run guide service. You fish with my team and me when you book with us. You don’t get dropped off on a stranger’s boat!
When is the Pacific halibut season in Newport, Oregon for 2026?
The Pacific halibut season for Newport in 2026 is generally open from spring through fall, except for the all-depth fishery, which is open for the Central Oregon Coast. Open dates are subject to change and limited, please check the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website, at myodfw.com, before booking.
Halibut seasons are not the same as fishing in a river throughout the summer. The fishery is run on a fixed number of days and these are finalised every spring. The recreational season for halibut in 2026 was finalized early in the year, but weather and quota may cause changes. Hence, I schedule trips to coincide with the window of open windows and watch the weather closely.
Captain Don’s quick take
It’s my personal opinion after years of these waters. Halibut Days off Newport are some of the most exciting days of the year, but they are few and far between. When a date is available and the ocean is playing ball, you want to be on the boat. I’m telling you what to do. Be sure to catch the window early, verify with ODFW, and be prepared to go when the window opens.
What happens to Pacific halibut when it is caught out of Newport?
When fishing out of Newport, anglers catch Pacific halibut by going offshore to deeper water and using heavy equipment to hit the bottom where the large flatfish feed. Halibut are strong and live on or near the bottom, therefore weighted rigs and baits are used to reach these fish.
As soon as we cross the bar, I’m reading the swell and wind as we leave Yaquina Bay. Halibut can be found on the Central Oregon Coast in deeper water, which slows the run. When I get us on a good location I get you in position, teach you how to feel the bottom and how to work your bait. These fish are also heavy, so to bring one up is a good workout and fun.
What is the ideal time to charter a Newport halibut?
When booking a Newport halibut charter the best time is as soon as you know your travel dates as open days for halibut are limited and they book quickly. The best time is typically spring to summer, but the best time is the days when there are no waves.
I inform guests to not wait. The good weather open days are booked rapidly after they are determined and confirmed with ODFW. The more flexible you can be with your schedule the better. Then we can choose another day when the swell is more favorable and the crossing of the bar will be safe.
So what about Depoe Bay and the rest of the Central Oregon Coast?
The season structure for Depoe Bay halibut fishing is the same as Newport, as it is part of the same all-depth fishery in Central Oregon Coast. The key difference is the port you depart from and the grounds that we can reach that day.

This is a lot of the coast I have fished over the years. From Newport we have excellent access to productive water, and the support of South Beach Marina and Yaquina Bay. My decision on where to fish is based on conditions and where the halibut have been holding.
What can you find on a Newport Oregon Fishing Charters outing?
The day will be hands on and guided and I will be sure that you have a safe day on the water with me and my staff. This is a genuine guide service and not a seat hire. I’m there every day, helping, teaching, adjusting.
Safety is the top priority on my boat. Before we head out of the dock, I always look at the swell, the direction of the wind, the bar, and the marine forecast. We don’t push it if the conditions are not safe. After we get outside, I assist everyone, from those who have caught halibut before to those who haven’t. I watch the ocean, the weather and the bite all day and when we need to move, I move.

Can you fish for other species the same day? Sometimes, depending on the rules, the season, and conditions. Many anglers pair halibut with bottom fishing for lingcod and rockfish on other trips. I will help you plan the right trip for what is open.
