Halibut Fishing in Newport, Oregon

Newport has some of the best halibut fishing Oregon has to offer, and 2026 is shaping up to be another strong year for anglers who want a real Oregon Coast fishing trip.

I’m Captain Don Koskela, owner and operator of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. We are a captain-run guide service, not a third-party booking service. When you book with us, you are booking a guided halibut fishing trip led by me and my team.

Halibut fishing out of Newport is not like a quick bay trip. These fish are powerful, the water can be deep, and the ocean conditions matter every day. My job is to watch the weather, tides, swell, bar conditions, regulations, and fish movement so we can make the best plan for your trip.

2026 Newport Halibut Fishing Season

For 2026, Newport falls in Oregon’s Central Oregon Coast Subarea for Pacific halibut fishing. The season is managed by quota, which means dates can change if the quota is reached.

As of the current 2026 Oregon halibut regulations, the Central Oregon Coast all-depth halibut season is scheduled to open May 1 and run seven days a week through July 31, or until the quota is caught. The summer all-depth season is scheduled for August 1 through October 31, seven days a week, or until the quota is caught.

Nearshore halibut fishing is also managed separately and is tied to the 40-fathom line and quota rules.

Because halibut regulations can change during the season, always confirm current ODFW rules before your trip. We also keep an eye on updates so we can help guests understand what is open and what makes sense for the day.

Captain Don’s Quick Take

Halibut fishing is one of the best trips we run out of Newport when the ocean and season line up.

These are big, strong fish with excellent meat. But this is also a trip where preparation matters. We need the right weather window, the right gear, and a safe plan.

When I take guests halibut fishing, I’m not just looking at a calendar. I’m looking at the ocean. If the wind, swell, or bar conditions do not make sense, we adjust. Safety always comes first.

What makes Newport good for halibut fishing?

Newport gives us access to productive Pacific Ocean halibut grounds off the Central Oregon Coast. These trips can reach deeper water and areas where Pacific halibut feed along soft bottom and offshore structure.

Halibut fishing often takes patience. It is not always fast action, but when a halibut bites, it can turn into one of the most memorable fish of the season.

The reward is worth it. Halibut is one of the best eating fish on the Oregon Coast, with firm, clean, white meat that is great for the table.

What should you expect on a Newport halibut charter?

You should expect a guided, hands-on ocean fishing trip where the plan depends on weather, regulations, and where the fish are likely to be.

We provide the fishing setup for the trip and help you understand what we are doing. If you are newer to ocean fishing, I’ll walk you through the process. If you have experience, I’ll work with you at that level.

Halibut trips may involve more travel time than a standard bottom fishing trip. These are ocean trips, so comfort and safety matter. I want guests to show up prepared, listen to instructions, and enjoy the full experience.

What should you bring for a halibut fishing trip?

Bring warm layers, rain gear, non-slip shoes, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera.

The Oregon Coast can feel colder on the water than it does in town. Even on a nice day, you may deal with wind, spray, fog, or changing weather.

If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before the trip. Halibut fishing can mean deeper water and more time offshore, so it is better to plan ahead.

You may also need the proper fishing license, tags, and ocean endorsement depending on current Oregon rules. Please confirm current license and regulation requirements before your trip.
