I’m Captain Don Koskela, owner and operator of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. We are a captain-run guide service, not a third-party booking service. When you book with us, you are booking a guided Oregon Coast fishing experience led by me and my team.
Dungeness crab are one of the most popular seafood catches on the Oregon Coast. They are fun to pull, great to eat, and a good fit for many guests when the season, conditions, and regulations allow it.
2026 Newport Dungeness Crab Fishing Season
For 2026, Dungeness crab fishing in Oregon is generally open in bays, estuaries, beaches, tide pools, piers, and jetties year-round, unless a closure or health advisory is in place.
Ocean crabbing has seasonal closures, and rules can change. That is why I always tell guests to check current ODFW regulations and Oregon Department of Agriculture shellfish safety updates before a trip.
As of current Oregon rules, the daily limit for sport Dungeness crab is 12 male crab, and they must be at least 5 ¾ inches across the back. Female Dungeness crab must be released.
Captain Don’s Quick Take
Dungeness crab fishing is a great add-on when it fits the trip and conditions.
Some days, crabbing pairs well with a bottom fishing charter. Other days, the tide, weather, or ocean conditions may change the plan.
When I guide a trip, I’m always looking at the full picture. That means the fishing, the crabbing, the weather, the tide, and what gives guests the best safe day on the water.
What makes Newport good for Dungeness crab?
Newport has access to Yaquina Bay and nearby Oregon Coast waters where Dungeness crab can be found when salinity, tide, and conditions are right.
Crab movement can change after heavy rain or big changes in water conditions. Fresh water moving through a bay can push crab toward saltier water.
That is one reason local knowledge matters. Crabbing is simple in some ways, but timing, location, and conditions still make a difference.
Can you combine crabbing with bottom fishing?
Yes, crabbing can often be combined with a bottom fishing trip when conditions, timing, and regulations allow it.
A crab and bottom fishing trip can be a great option because guests get two Oregon Coast experiences in one day. You may fish for rockfish and lingcod, then also have a chance to bring home Dungeness crab if the crabbing is good.
I do not guarantee crab or fish. What I do is watch the conditions, set a smart plan, and give you the best opportunity I can.
What should you expect on a Newport crabbing trip?
You should expect a hands-on guided trip where we set crab gear, fish or wait depending on the plan, then pull the gear and sort legal crab.
I’ll help you understand what we are doing and what makes a crab legal to keep. We follow the rules, measure carefully, and release crab that do not meet current requirements.
Crabbing can be a lot of fun for families because it is easy to understand and exciting when the pots come up.
What should you bring for a Dungeness crab fishing trip?
Bring warm layers, rain gear, non-slip shoes, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera.
The Oregon Coast can feel colder on the water than it does in town. Be ready for wind, spray, fog, and changing weather.
You may also need the proper license or shellfish license depending on current Oregon rules. Please confirm current license, regulation, and health advisory requirements before your trip.
