Everything You Need to Know Before You Fish With Captain Don

Preparing for your private fishing trip out of Newport, Oregon shouldn’t be stressful. Below, Captain Don Koskela answers our most frequently asked questions regarding deposits, booking policies, licensing, and preparation for your day aboard our Pastime Fishing Adventures vessel.

Booking, Deposits, and Payments

Do you require a deposit to hold a charter date?
Yes. A 15% deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your private charter date. All initial deposits must be processed via credit card.
What is your trip cancellation and refund policy?
    • Customer Cancellations: You must cancel at least three weeks in advance of your scheduled trip to receive a refund of your deposit. If you cancel with less than three weeks’ notice, your deposit is forfeited; however, forfeited deposits can be applied toward a new trip if you rebook within two months.
    • Captain Cancellations: If Captain Don must cancel the trip for any reason, you will receive a 100% full refund.
    • Weather Cancellations: If your trip is canceled due to unsafe Yaquina Bay bar conditions or rough ocean weather, we will attempt to reschedule your trip. If you cannot reschedule within one calendar year of your original booking date, you will receive a 100% full refund.

How do I make the final payment on the day of the trip?

Captain Don accepts cash, checks, or credit cards for final balances at the dock.
    • Note: A 3.2% processing fee is added to all credit card transactions. A $50 fee will be charged for any bounced checks. Gratuities and tips for the captain are greatly appreciated but completely optional.

Licenses and Regulations

How do I get an Oregon fishing license?

All guests aged 12 and older are required to have a valid Oregon fishing license. You can purchase them in advance directly from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) online, or you can purchase a one-day license directly from Captain Don at the boat for $21 per person.

What should I bring and wear on my fishing trip?

  • Clothing: Dress in layers. The Oregon coast weather changes rapidly, so bring a windbreaker or rain jacket, a warm hat, and closed-toe shoes with good grip.
  • Food & Drink: Bring plenty of snacks, lunch, and drinks for your group to stay hydrated and energized.
  • Gear: Bring a camera or smartphone to capture your catches.
  • Restrooms: Please use the onshore marina facilities immediately prior to boarding the boat. Returning to the dock mid-trip drastically cuts into your group’s active fishing time.

How can I prevent and handle sea sickness?

Ocean swells can cause motion sickness, even on calm days. To protect your trip, we recommend:

  1. Medication: Take a motion sickness medication like Dramamine or Bonine the night before your trip, and another dose one hour before setting sail.
  2. Acupressure: Wear Sea-Sickness bands (available at most pharmacies) to help naturally block nausea.
  3. Important Note: Every individual reacts differently to the ocean. Please note that refunds are not issued if your group requests an early return to the shore due to sea sickness.
