Lingcod Fishing Info
Newport has some of the best lingcod fishing Oregon has to offer, and it is one of the most exciting bottom fishing trips we run on the Oregon Coast.
I’m Captain Don Koskela, owner and operator of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. We are a captain-run guide service, not a third-party booking service. When you book with us, you are booking a guided lingcod fishing trip led by me and my team.
Lingcod are strong, aggressive fish that live around reefs, rocks, and structure. They hit hard, fight well, and are excellent on the table. For a lot of anglers, catching a good lingcod is one of the highlights of fishing out of Newport.
2026 Newport Lingcod Fishing Season
For 2026, Oregon’s sport bottomfish rules list lingcod as open at all-depths year-round, with no seasonal depth restriction. The 2026 daily limit is 3 lingcod per angler, with a 22-inch minimum length. Lingcod are not counted as part of the general marine species bag limit.
Marine fishing regulations can change during the season, so always confirm current ODFW rules before your trip. I also keep an eye on updates so we can fish legally, safely, and responsibly.
Captain Don’s Quick Take
Lingcod fishing is a great Newport charter option because it is hands-on, active, and good for both newer and experienced anglers.
When I take guests lingcod fishing, I’m looking for the right reef, the right drift, and the right presentation. Lingcod like structure, so boat control and local knowledge matter.
My job is to help you understand what we are doing, keep the trip safe, and give you the best chance I can based on the ocean conditions that day.
What makes Newport good for lingcod fishing?
Newport gives us access to productive Oregon Coast reefs and rocky bottom where lingcod like to live and feed.
These fish are ambush predators. They hold around structure and wait for food to come by. That is why we focus on bottom, rocks, reefs, and the kind of places where lingcod are most likely to be.
A good lingcod bite can happen fast. When they hit, you usually know it.
Is lingcod fishing good for beginners?
Yes, lingcod fishing can be a good trip for beginners when ocean conditions are safe.
You do not need years of experience to enjoy it. I’ll show you how to hold the rod, work the gear, stay near the bottom, and feel the bite.
It is also a good trip for experienced anglers because lingcod can test your focus and your gear. They are not just something you reel in without paying attention.
What should you expect on a Newport lingcod charter?
You should expect a guided, hands-on bottom fishing trip where we target lingcod around reefs and structure.
We may also encounter other legal bottomfish depending on the trip, conditions, and current regulations. I’ll explain the plan before we fish and help you understand what we are targeting.
Some days the bite is steady. Some days we have to work for them. That is real fishing. I do not guarantee fish, but I do work hard to put guests in the best position I can.
What should you bring for a lingcod fishing trip?
Bring warm layers, rain gear, non-slip shoes, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera.
The Oregon Coast can feel colder on the water than it does at the dock. Wind, fog, spray, and rain can show up even when town feels calm.
If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before the trip. You may also need the proper fishing license and ocean endorsement depending on current Oregon rules, so confirm license and regulation requirements before your trip.
