Bottom Fishing in Newport, Oregon

Newport has some of the best bottom fishing Oregon has to offer, and it is one of my favorite trips for families, beginners, and experienced anglers who want a hands-on day on the water.

I’m Captain Don Koskela, owner and operator of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. We are a captain-run guide service, not a third-party booking service. When you book with us, you are booking a guided bottom fishing trip led by me and my team.

Bottom fishing out of Newport usually means targeting fish like rockfish and lingcod around reefs, rocky structure, and productive Pacific Ocean bottom. These trips can be a great fit because the fishing is active, the fish are excellent on the table, and guests get to learn as they fish.

2026 Newport Bottom Fishing Season

For 2026, Oregon bottom fishing includes species like rockfish, lingcod, greenling, cabezon, and other groundfish species, depending on current rules and open areas.

ODFW set the 2026 daily lingcod limit at 3 fish and kept the general marine bag limit at 4 fish for rockfish, greenlings, cabezon, and related species, with specific sub-limits and species rules. Yelloweye rockfish and quillback rockfish remain prohibited for retention, and marine regulations can change during the season.

Because bottom fishing rules can change, always confirm current ODFW regulations before your trip. I also keep an eye on updates so we can fish legally, safely, and responsibly.

Captain Don’s Quick Take

Bottom fishing is one of the best Newport fishing charter options because it is active, practical, and fun for a wide range of anglers.

When I take guests bottom fishing, I’m watching the ocean, the wind, the swell, the tides, the bar conditions, and where the fish are likely holding. Some days we fish close. Some days we adjust based on water and weather.

My goal is simple. I want you to feel safe, prepared, and involved. If you are new, I’ll show you what to do. If you are experienced, I’ll help you get dialed in.

What makes Newport good for bottom fishing?

Newport gives us access to reefs, rocky structure, and productive Oregon Coast bottom where rockfish and lingcod live.

Bottom fish are often found near structure because that is where they can feed, hide, and hold. As a guide, I’m looking for the right water, the right drift, and the right presentation.

This is not just dropping a line and hoping. Good bottom fishing still takes local knowledge, boat control, and attention to the conditions.

What fish can you catch on a Newport bottom fishing charter?

On a Newport bottom fishing charter, we commonly target rockfish and lingcod, along with other legal bottomfish when regulations allow.

Rockfish are popular because they are fun to catch and good to eat. Lingcod are strong, aggressive fish that can make a trip exciting fast. They hit hard and fight well.

Every trip depends on what is open, what is legal to keep, and what the ocean allows us to do that day. I do not guarantee fish, but I do work hard to put guests in the best position I can.

Is bottom fishing good for beginners?

Yes, bottom fishing is one of the best Newport fishing trips for beginners.

It is hands-on and easy to learn. I can show you how to hold the rod, feel the bottom, work the gear, and know when a fish bites.

It is also a good trip for families because everyone can stay involved. You do not need years of experience to enjoy it.

What should you bring for a bottom fishing trip?

Bring warm layers, rain gear, non-slip shoes, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera.

The Oregon Coast can feel colder on the water than it does at the dock. Wind, fog, spray, and rain can show up even when town feels calm.

If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before the trip. You may also need the proper fishing license and ocean endorsement depending on current Oregon rules, so confirm license and regulation requirements before your trip.
