Cabezon Fishing Info

Newport has some of the best cabezon fishing Oregon has to offer, and these fish are a unique part of our bottom fishing trips when the season and regulations allow it.

I’m Captain Don Koskela, owner and operator of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. We are a captain-run guide service, not a third-party booking service. When you book with us, you are booking a guided Oregon Coast fishing trip led by me and my team.

Cabezon are bottom fish that live around reefs, rocks, and structure. They are not always the main target like lingcod or rockfish, but they are a fun fish to catch and a good bonus when they are open to keep.

2026 Newport Cabezon Fishing Season

For 2026, Oregon bottomfish rules list cabezon as closed to retention from January 1 through June 30. Starting July 1, 2026, cabezon have a 1-fish daily sub-limit per angler as part of the general marine species bag limit, with a 16-inch minimum length.

The general marine bag limit for rockfish, cabezon, greenling, skates, and related species is 4 fish per angler in 2026. ODFW also notes that yelloweye rockfish and quillback rockfish are prohibited for retention, and in-season updates can change marine fishing rules.

Always confirm current ODFW regulations before your trip. I also keep an eye on updates so we can fish legally, safely, and responsibly.

Captain Don’s Quick Take

Cabezon fishing is best thought of as part of a Newport bottom fishing trip.

These fish live tight to rocky structure, so they are often found in the same type of water where we fish for rockfish and lingcod. They can hit hard, and they are strong for their size.

When I take guests bottom fishing, I’m watching the reefs, the drift, the ocean conditions, and the rules. If cabezon are open and legal, they can be a great fish to add to the day.

H4: What makes Newport good for cabezon fishing?

Newport gives us access to reefs and rocky Oregon Coast bottom where cabezon like to live.

Cabezon are structure fish. They hold near rocks, reefs, kelp, and bottom areas where they can ambush food. That means local knowledge matters.

Good bottom fishing is not just dropping a line anywhere. I’m looking for the right water, the right drift, and the kind of bottom that gives us the best chance at legal fish.

Is cabezon fishing good for beginners?

Yes, cabezon fishing can be good for beginners as part of a guided bottom fishing trip.

You do not need years of experience to enjoy it. I’ll show you how to hold the rod, work the gear, stay near the bottom, and feel the bite.

Most guests are also fishing for rockfish or lingcod on the same type of trip. That keeps the day active and gives everyone a better overall Oregon Coast fishing experience.

What should you expect on a Newport cabezon charter?

You should expect a hands-on bottom fishing trip where cabezon may be part of the opportunity when retention is open and the fish meet current rules.

We may target reefs and rocky structure where bottom fish live. Depending on the season and regulations, we may also target rockfish, lingcod, or other legal bottomfish.

I do not guarantee fish. That would not be honest. What I can tell you is that I’ll use my experience to make smart decisions based on the ocean, the season, and the conditions we have that day.

What should you bring for a cabezon fishing trip?

Bring warm layers, rain gear, non-slip shoes, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera.

The Oregon Coast can feel colder on the water than it does in Newport. Wind, fog, spray, and rain can show up even when the dock feels calm.

If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before the trip. You may also need the proper fishing license and ocean endorsement depending on current Oregon rules, so confirm license and regulation requirements before your trip.
