Salmon Fishing in Newport, Oregon
Newport has some of the best salmon fishing Oregon has to offer, and 2026 gives anglers a good chance to experience it when the season, ocean conditions, and fish movement line up.
I’m Captain Don Koskela, owner and operator of Newport Oregon Fishing Charters. We are a captain-run guide service, not a third-party booking service. When you book with us, you are booking a guided salmon fishing trip led by me and my team.
Salmon fishing out of Newport is all about timing, water conditions, bait, and staying flexible. Some days we are looking for Chinook. Some days coho may be part of the opportunity if the season and regulations allow it. Every day, I’m watching the ocean, the weather, the tides, the bar conditions, and the current rules.
2026 Newport Salmon Fishing Season
For 2026, Newport falls in the Oregon ocean salmon area south of Cape Falcon. Ocean salmon seasons are managed carefully, and some fisheries are tied to quotas, dates, species rules, and in-season updates.
As of the current 2026 ocean salmon regulations, the all-salmon-except-coho season from Cape Falcon to the Oregon and California border opened March 15 and is scheduled to run into the season dates set by ODFW. Mark-select coho and later non-mark-select coho opportunities may also be available during specific 2026 windows, depending on the area, quota, and current regulation updates.
Because salmon rules can change during the season, always confirm the current ODFW salmon regulations before your trip. We also keep an eye on updates so we can help guests understand what is open and what makes sense for the day.
Captain Don’s Quick Take
Salmon fishing is one of the most exciting trips we run out of Newport when the ocean and fish are working in our favor.
These fish move. They follow bait, water temperature, current, and ocean conditions. That means salmon fishing takes patience, attention, and a good plan.
When I take guests salmon fishing, I’m not just looking at the calendar. I’m looking at the water. If the bite moves, we adjust. If the wind or swell changes, we adjust. Safety and smart decisions always come first.
What makes Newport good for salmon fishing?
Newport gives us access to productive Pacific Ocean water where Chinook and coho salmon can stage and feed before moving toward coastal rivers and bays.
The area around Newport, Yaquina Bay, and the nearby ocean waters can be a strong place to target salmon when the season is open and conditions are right. Salmon fishing is different from bottom fishing because we are often covering water, watching for signs, and working gear through the right zone.
A good salmon day can be one of the best days on the Oregon Coast. But I always tell guests that salmon are moving fish. There are no guarantees, and that is part of what makes the bite so rewarding when it happens.
What salmon can you catch out of Newport?
The main salmon people ask about out of Newport are Chinook salmon and coho salmon.
Chinook, also called king salmon, are known for their size, power, and excellent meat. Coho are also great fish and can be very fun when the bite is active. Which salmon we can target or keep depends on the current season, mark rules, area, and regulations.
Before every salmon trip, I want guests to understand what is currently open. Salmon regulations are not something to guess on. We follow the rules and adjust the trip around what is legal, safe, and realistic.
What should you expect on a Newport salmon charter?
You should expect a guided ocean fishing trip where the plan depends on the season, the marine forecast, and where the salmon are most likely to be.
Salmon fishing may involve trolling, watching gear, reading the water, and staying patient while we look for fish. I’ll explain what we are doing and help you understand how the setup works.
If you are new to salmon fishing, that is fine. I guide beginners, families, and experienced anglers. My job is to help you feel comfortable and give you the best opportunity I can based on the conditions in front of us.
How do ocean conditions affect salmon fishing in Newport?
Ocean conditions affect salmon fishing every day because wind, swell, tides, current, fog, and bar conditions can change the plan.
Some days the ocean lets us fish the water we want. Other days, it makes more sense to adjust the trip or target a different opportunity. That is part of fishing the Oregon Coast.
As a guide, I’m always watching safety first. A good salmon trip starts with a smart ocean plan. Then we look for the best water, bait, and fish activity we can find.
What should you bring for a salmon fishing trip?
Bring warm layers, rain gear, non-slip shoes, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera.
The Oregon Coast can feel colder on the water than it does in town. Even in summer, you may deal with fog, wind, spray, or rain. Dress in layers so you can stay comfortable.
If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before the trip. You may also need the proper fishing license, tags, or endorsements depending on current Oregon rules. Please confirm current license and regulation requirements before your trip.
