How To Prepare for your Next Newport Oregon Fishing Charter

Tips and Tricks of How to Prepare and Enjoy your Next Newport, Oregon Fishing Charter

As is with all fishing adventures, you need to properly prepare to get the most out of your experience. This is definately the case when to prepare for a Newport, Oregon fishing charter. This is because preparing for  deep sea fishing charter is completely different than fishing the rivers and lake of Oregon. In this blog we will cover how you can best prepare and have an amazing experience on your next trip.

What Clothing Should I Wear to Fish in?

No matter what time of year you are fishing off the coast of Newport, you can count on it being chilly! Average temperatures in Newport rarely exceed 60 degrees Fahrenheit. When you pair the chilly weather with the ocean breeze it can get a bit cold. During the summer months you are usually good with a good pair of pants, a heavy sweatshirt/jacket and a water-proof jacket. I would highly recommend bringing a beanie or something warm to cover your head. It’s also a good idea to bring a light pair of gloves.

While fishing for Dungeness crab and bottom fish during the winter, you need to prepare even more! Even though most fishing charters can prepare their boats with full canvas and heaters, it’s important that you stay dry while reeling in the fish. We highly recommend coming prepared with rain gear if you are coming during one of the colder months. This should come with warm layers underneath. It’s also a great idea to bring water-proof shoes or boots.

When do Most Fishing Charters Leave?

Generally speaking, mosts fishing charters leave early in the morning. The most common time 6:00 AM at the dock. This means your fishing charter will have the boat in the water and be completely prepared to fish by the time you arrive. Depending on what fish you are targeting, the time it will take to get the lines in the water will vary from 20 minutes up to an hour and a half. Some fishing charters will provide half-day fishing but those trips normally start early morning as well because that’s when they best bite is on.

Do I Need to Pack Food?

The answer to this question is a big, fat resounding YES! You will want to bring plenty of food and drinks for your fishing trip. For fishing the simpler, the better. Bring along snacks and food that is easily prepared like sandwiches and granola bars. Our fishing Captains will very rarely say no to cookies! Some people choose to bring adult beverages, and you may think this will enhance the experience, it also contributes to sea sickness. Please check with us before your fishing trip to see if your Captain allows alcohol on his or her boat.

Do I Need Fishing Gear or a Fishing License?

All Newport Oregon Fishing Charters include everything you need to fish except the fishing license. This includes an experienced captain, gear and bait. The only thing you are expected to provide is your own fishing license. We recommend purchasing daily licenses from your captain, but they can also be obtained by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

How to Prepare for Sea Sickness

Sea sickness is a scary thing and people often have no idea how they will react to the ocean until they get out on their first fishing charter. If you know you are susceptible  to motion sickness, you will have the advantage of knowing to thoroughly prepare before your fishing trip. The oldest and most simple remedy for sea sickness is fresh air and keeping your eyes forward and on the horizon, but in cast that doesn’t work, we have a lot of other great ideas for you to try.

Medicine

Motion sickness pills like Dramamine can be highly effective at battling sea sickness.  This real trick is knowing when to take them. Many people will give different recommendations. Captain Don Koskela, one of our favorite charter Captains recommends taking the recommended dose the night before and then again one hour before you are a scheduled to set sail. This gives your body time to let the medicine start working and be at it’s most effective when your trip starts. In addition you can take more as needed during the trip.

Sea Sickness Bands

Sea sickness bands are another effective way to help control sea sickness. There are a lot of different bands and styles, but they all work on the same principle. The idea is to target specific nerves with acupressure to help battle nausea. This is a great, medicine-free options for those of you that are nervous to try medicine like dramamine. However, effectiveness varies by person so I wouldn’t count on these as a complete replacement of other measures.

Natural Remedies

There are also some great natural remedies for sea sickness like ginger. There are a few companies that sell ginger gum that helps deliver relief in a very natural form.

Seek Medical Help

The most drastic option visiting a doctor and getting prescription help for battling sea sickness. They have a number of options at their disposal, but it usually comes in the form of a patch. Although this option is the most expensive, it it usually the most effective and has the benefit of being overseen by a medical professional.

We also believe sea sickness can also be largely mental. A great way to battle sea sickness is by getting your mind off of the problem. Our favorite way to do this is catching a ton of great fish! You can also get caught up in telling old fishing stories.
