How to Prepare for Your Next Newport, Oregon Fishing Charter
So, you’ve traveled to Newport, Oregon for the fantastic fishing opportunities and booked a fishing charter. You’re in for a treat!
But you’re probably wondering: What’s next? Is there anything to prepare for with the fishing trip, or do you just bring yourself?
What’s great about fishing charters is that you can choose all-inclusive packages, so you actually just need to bring yourself, and you’re a-game! However, there are certain things we recommend you pack and prepare for. So here’s a quick guide on how to prepare for your next Newport, Oregon fishing charter.
How to Prepare for Your Next Newport, Oregon Fishing Charter
Whether you’re with family, friends, or on your own, there are things we recommend you prepare for so you have an excellent time. We’ll show you what to expect in the fishing charter, what to bring, and what you should do so you can spend most of your time having fun than worrying.
What to Wear
We recommend bringing rain gear, even if you don’t expect it to rain that day. It isn’t only for “just in case,” but also to protect you from sea spray! At least grab a windbreaker or rain jacket, so you don’t end up soaking wet once you’re back on land.
Otherwise, you can just wear light clothing like a simple shirt and shorts. Light-colored clothes with non-skid shoes work best since they would reflect the sun. Dark-colored clothes absorb the light, making it hotter.
You can also wear fishing gloves to protect your hands from the fish you caught in Newport and when handling equipment.
Do NOT wear the following:
- Flip flops because the deck surface can be slippery
- Jeans, because no one likes the feel of wet denim
- Sweaters, because they are thick and will just end up heating you up
Basically, wear anything that has you feeling relaxed and comfortable based on the weather forecast.
Protect Yourself
It’s going to be hot out there; expect yourself to be under the sun for long hours! Because of that, you need to protect yourself by wearing a hat and polarized sunglasses. Those will protect your head and your eyes.
We also recommend bringing and wearing sunscreen with an SPF of over 50. Lip balm or chapstick is also best to keep your lips hydrated.
What to Bring
While we love the fact fishing charters are all-inclusive, there are certain things you should still bring, such as:
- Your fishing charter might include a meal based on the catch of the day, though it may not be enough if you’re going all day! Keep energized and pack some snacks you can enjoy while waiting for a catch, like sandwiches or granola bars. Also, bring a lot of water and your favored beverage to stay hydrated.
- Bring a first aid kit and your prescription medicine for emergencies, along with anti-seasickness medication. Also, have alcohol or hand sanitizer with wet wipes available to keep your hands clean after handling much slimy fish.
- Extra clothes and towel because you’ll sweat and may get wet from the waters.
- A camera and your phone to document your trip, as well as your wallet with IDs
- Have an ice chest and fish bag but leave them in your car. That will be for storing your fresh catch.
- Depending on the fishing charter you book, you may need a fishing license. Ask the company ahead of time and prepare to get one if needed.
- You can bring your fishing gear, though fishing charters usually provide this.
- Pack all your items in a waterproof and straightforward tote bag or backpack.
What to Do Before the Trip
You should prepare about a week ahead before your fishing trip, so you won’t have to cram your packing overnight, only to forget things.
Print any documents you may need to print, such as the confirmation email from the fishing charter, your licenses, among other travel documents. Read any reminders your fishing charter sent you, such as safety reminders to keep in mind, onboard policies, any extra expenses you need to pay for, departure times, directions to the boat, and whatnot.
Be around the fishing charter area about an hour before the trip begins. Give yourself leeway time for parking or in case you get lost finding the boat and if the captain has any last-minute reminders to give before the trip. It’s better to be early rather than late, with a chance of missing the trip.
What to Do During the Trip
During the trip, meet the crew and get on board! Remember to be friendly and respectful towards everyone on the boat, whether crew member or fellow angler. Doing so will make your fishing trip enjoyable! Don’t be scared to ask about the waters and fish species; everyone is there to help each other out.
Besides treating the crew and other anglers with respect, treat the boat similarly. Don’t ransack it or leave trash lying around, which can be a safety hazard when people are walking. Furthermore, treat the waters with respect and never throw anything out of the boat unless it’s your fishing lures or baits!
Avoid running or horseplaying in the boat, leading to further accidents. If you have children on board, teach them to stay in one place rather than run everywhere.
Once you’re settled in a spot, get ready to enjoy and start fishing!
Wrapping It Up
Technically, there isn’t much to prepare for with fishing charters except to pack what you need and make sure you’re in your best health. However, there are certain things you’re better off learning and planning for, so you have a safe and fantastic time out in the waters.
